For the exhibition, artist Maty Biayenda has developed the installation Doll House with Maison Lemarié, which specialises in the art of feathers, flowers and couture, and Atelier Lognon, an expert in pleating, both of which are resident Maisons d'art at le19M.
A 2023 graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, her work explores the multiplicity of Afro-descendant identities and the objectification and liberation of Black female bodies through the reproduction of real or fictional characters.
The artist interprets a doll's house, an object of memory and a place of imagination, evoking childhood and play. On each of the house's textile sides, faces are printed on muslin treated with different techniques such as flat pleating and accordion pleating by Atelier Lognon or embroidery by Maison Lemarié. In the title of her installation, Maty Biayenda uses English terms such as "doll" and "house" in reference to the voguing culture of 1970s New York ballrooms, which were primarily frequented by the Latin and Black queer community.
Discover this work in the exhibition until 14 December!
“Today, le19M is an incredible place for artists and craftspeople to meet and create new combinations. The collaboration with Maty Biayenda is a perfect example of this synergy, a unique creation full of meaning, that aspires to create beauty.”
Christelle Kocher, Artistic Director of Atelier Lognon and Maison Lemarié
