To coincide with the CHANEL 2024/25 Cruise collection fashion show on 2 May in Marseille, le19M is setting up a free temporary gallery that is open to the public in the Fort Saint-Jean of the Mucem. From 3 to 26 May, la Galerie du 19M Marseille will provide a space for dialogue and expression between the Métiers d’art and the Marseille art scene.
Put together by an advisory board of creative figures from Marseille, the programme will include a group exhibition, participatory workshops, and roundtable discussions. It will feature artists, craftspeople, designers, local organisations, and creative spaces from Marseille and other key locations in the history of le19M.
In keeping with the vocation of la Galerie du 19M Paris/Aubervilliers, the exhibition celebrates the interweaving of practices, with a view to discovery, inspiration, and transmission.
Following on from CHANEL's 2024/25 cruise collection show on May 2 in Marseille, CHANEL has chosen to highlight the synergies between fashion and decoration expertise and the city's cultural ecosystem. From May 3 to 26, the 19M is launching a free temporary gallery open to all: la Galerie du 19M Marseille. This will be le19M's second out-of-home program - and its first in France - following the one developed with Dakar's creative scenes from January to March 2023, which welcomed over 10,000 visitors.
le Fort Saint-Jean / Mucem,
a village in the heart of Marseille
la Galerie du 19M Marseille is taking up residence for four weeks in the city’s landmark Fort Saint-Jean, one of the sites of the Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations).
Opened in 2013, the Mucem is home to a landmark collection drawn from the holdings of the former Musée National des Arts et Tradition Populaires: prints, furniture, costumes, jewellery, etc. The discovery of artisanal savoir-faire, the blending of creative styles, the natural affinity for the Mediterranean, from Hyères to Venice, are all values shared by le19M and the Mucem. A symbol of the cultural momentum generated by the city’s nomination as European Capital of Culture in 2013, the Mucem also has a mission that is dear to la Galerie du 19M: the transmission of a heritage historically located in a particular geographical area, the Mediterranean basin.
Fort Saint-Jean, which overlooks the entrance to the Old Port, is linked by a monumental footbridge to the new Mucem building, J4, designed by Marseille architects Rudy Ricciotti, who also designed le19M in Paris/Aubervilliers, and Roland Carta. With its narrow streets, staircases, gardens, and terraces, Fort Saint-Jean is a village unto itself that can be explored free of charge, with breathtaking views over Marseille.
the Programme
As an extension of its Paris/Aubervilliers base, la Galerie du 19M Marseille is a space for dialogue between the Métiers d’art of fashion and interior design and Marseille’s creative scene. The project, which is open to all, aims:
• to contribute to the development of the Métiers d’art of fashion and interior design;
• to make their invaluable savoir-faire, at the cutting edge of innovation, desirable and to contribute to it through the interweaving of disciplines;
• and finally, to preserve the Métiers d’art by passing them on, by inspiring young people to take up vocations or encouraging them to change careers.
The multi-disciplinary programme combines contemporary creation and traditional skills, including a group exhibition, roundtable discussions, and practical workshops introducing visitors to these skills. To ensure that the programme is as unique and accessible as possible, it has been entrusted to an advisory board made up of leading creative figures from Marseille and experts in its creative scene: Olivier Amsellem, Emmanuelle Luciani, Charlotte Pelouse, Karine Terlizzi, Caroline Perdrix et Mossi Traoré.
The exhibition will feature artists, craftspeople, designers, local organisations, and creative spaces from Marseille and other key locations in the history of le19M.
the Participatory Workshops,
hands-on experience for all audiences
In addition to the programme, a series of educational workshops for all ages has been devised, including two embroidery workshops open to all.
