Mathilde Gullaud, designer and former resident of the Bureau du Design, de la Mode et des Métiers d’art (BDMMA), invites young audiences to learn about the ancient art of Japanese marbled paper, known as suminagashi.

Children will be introduced to this artistic and meditative practice in a fun way by creating charms with unique patterns.

with Mathilde Gullaud

During her residency with artisans in Tokyo in 2024 as part of the Edo Tokyo Kirari programme, Mathilde Gullaud combined her personal practice of textile marbling with the suminagashi technique. Translating this traditional paper-based technique to a textile medium is the basis for these workshops, which are as meditative as they are creative.
During this workshop, Mathilde Gullaud shares her knowledge of this marbled paper technique and helps children print patterns on a textile accessory.
With just a little ink and a touch of soap, magic happens on the surface of the water. Children are invited to play with floating bubbles of colour to create a marbled pattern, like the ones found on marble or inside old books.
Inspired by shapes from Japanese mythology, they will cut their fabric charms out of canvas and felt and use the suminagashi technique to adorn them with delicate marbled patterns.
