“What would be left of us if we had to sum up humanity in a few symbols?”

This is the question posed by What Remains, a project devised by Eléa-Jeanne Schmitter in collaboration with Atelier Montex.
The artist takes inspiration from the Pioneer plaques, engraved messages sent into space by NASA in the early 1970s to represent humanity to potential extraterrestrial civilisations.
Rather than saying what we are, the work questions what we would now choose to pass on. This oversized project takes the form of a collective primer, hand-embroidered by the craftsmen and women of Atelier Montex.
Each motif becomes a symbol of this shared memory: a common visual language, between heritage and imagination.
On the walls, Eléa-Jeanne Schmitter accompanies this textile piece with photographic and graphic work that transcribes the comments gathered at la Galerie du 19M on the notion of transmission—a visual and sensitive echo to this embroidered fresco.
