A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Nina Jayasuriya uses her hands and, in particular, the ancient art of modelling clay to explore the notion of craftsmanship in a world of overproduction, sculpting everyday objects (light switches, shoes, postcards, etc.).

In this installation, she recounts her Sri Lankan family and cultural heritage and puts the circulation of gestures into perspective. Inspired by a monk's robe, a large piece of fabric is dyed orange, revealing patterns created using the batik technique. Suspended from this fabric are garlands of socks collected by the artist and embellished with smocking and organza by Maison Paloma, reminiscent of the garlands found in Sri Lankan temples.

An installation that blends tradition and contemporary aesthetics, where gestures circulate and respond to one another.

Discover this work in the exhibition until 14 December 2025.

“This work with Nina is about more than a result. It’s a vibrant dialogue between hands. We inspired each other. She intertwines the sacred and the profane; we bring together the gesture, the material, and exceptional savoir-faire. From simple socks, flowers were born.”

Émeline Amétis x Maison Paloma

For this exhibition, artist Émeline Amétis and Paloma, le19M's resident Maison d'art specialising in flou, have developed a unique installation: Les Derniers Atlantes.

A graduate of the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles, Émeline Amétis explores the relationships we have with territories which have multiple identities. The Franco-Caribbean artist imagines new ways of conveying these stories, combining documentary production and photographic installations.

Working alongside Paloma, the artist has superimposed three layers of fabric to create a textile map of Atlantis, the mythical island that disappeared at the crossroads of the African, European, and American continents. The first silk panel is embroidered with organza strips gathered by Paloma to give the illusion of waves breaking; the second panel, composed of cyanotype prints from Émeline Amétis's archives, features graphic stitching that obscures the map's landmarks; finally, the third panel reveals embroidery hidden like a buried treasure.

Discover this work in the exhibition until 14 December 2025.

“It’s a composition for two voices, in which Emeline prints the light while Paloma embroiders the silences. The materials are superimposed, coming together like dancing thoughts, so that the textile becomes a landscape to be explored.”
