la Galerie du 19M - Paris/Aubervilliers
For more details, refer to the practical information.
This workshop provides an introduction to embroidery, using an original medium—the book. Using a variety of materials such as cotton and silk threads, beads, and sequins, participants are invited to transform the book they have brought along into a truly precious object, adorned with decorative embroidery in the tradition of the prestigious Maison Lesage. The application of ornaments and threads using different embroidery stitches invites participants to explore the evocative power of the imagination and creativity inherent in literature.
Participants will take their own embroidered book home with them.
Participants will also be able to embroider an old book chosen by the artist from a selection that will be made available.
Brankiça Žilović
Brankiça Žilović is a graduate of ENSBA, where she attended the workshops of Vladimir Veličković and Dominique Gauthier. Embroidery and the world of textiles gradually became her exclusive medium. Her work is influenced by the history of Serbia and the wider issues of migration and borders, combining individual and collective histories.
Her work has been exhibited at the Domaine départemental de Chamarande, the Fondation LAccolade (Institut de France), the Fondation François Schneider in Wattwiller, the Shanghai Museum of Modern Art, the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile in Turin, and the Musée de la dentelle in Caudry. The artist took part in the “Au-delà de nos rêves” exhibition at the Monastère Royal de Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse and has participated in several contemporary art fairs and festivals including Artissima, Drawing Now, and the Salon de Montrouge. She has taught at the Parsons School in Paris (Textile in Fashion Design) and at LISAA (Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués). She has also taught in the textile department at the Ecole supérieure des Beaux-arts d’Angers, where she coordinated the ‘Extra’ Master’s degree.
With a technical mastery developed over some fifteen years, Brankiça Žilović has developed a hybrid and innovative repertoire, exploring the potential of embroidery in a constantly evolving series of stitches and materials. In the run-up to the centenary of the Maison Lesage, she is working with a variety of media and volumes, inviting the public to embroider memories on photographs and old books.
